Right now I’ve just about finished 5 pages of my rough draft, and really only scratched the historical side of things. This is going to be quite a long paper!
I think maybe I’ve been doing a little to much reasearching, and not enough writing. I have been doing a good amount of reading from my book, Stanley Sadie’s Music Guide, An Introduction. So far I’ve gained extremely good information about Richard Wagner and Guiseppe Verdi, who were two of the most influential operatic composers of all time. Heres an interesting fact: one of Wagner’s most famous operatic cycles, The Ring cycle, is composed of four different operas and take about 15 hours to perform.
What I’ve been noticing in my personal research is that there isn’t much to be found about my specific topic; that is the relationship between historical events and societal changes that affected musical output. This is not a huge problem however, because there is so much information that can be used to infer about this subject. Especially in the Romantic period, we have a great deal of historical knowledge, and the musical output of this time is very well documented.
